Simple Facts
Third planet in the Solar System.
Not named after a roman god.
Our home planet.
Is in the "goldilocks zone".
Orbit
Earth takes 23.934 hours to complete 1 rotation.
It take 365.26 days to complete 1 orbit around the Sun.
Orbit is not a perfect circle.
Internal Structure
Earth's core is approximately 4,400 miles (or 7,100 km) wide.
The core is responsible for the planet's magnetic field.
Earth's mantle is just about 1,800 miles (or 2,600 km) thick.
There are 2 types of crust:
Continental crust (the continents) which is 25 miles (or 40km) thick.
Oceanic crust (mainly made up of basalt) which is 5 miles (8 miles) thick.
Formation
Formed about 4.5 billion years ago
Earth formed when gravity pulled swirling gas and dust in to become the third planet from the Sun.
Like its fellow terrestrial planets, Earth has a central core, a rocky mantle and a solid crust.
